¿Qué es la apostilla? • What is an Apostille?

La apostilla es el documento emitido por el Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores que acredita que un documento emitido en la República de Guatemala es auténtico y, por lo tanto, que tiene validez para ser usado en el extranjero.

¿Cuánto cuesta? 

A partir del 9 de abril de 2024, el cobro por la emisión de la apostilla será de Q 75.00 por cada una.

¿Cómo la obtengo en Guatemala?

Para obtenerla deben seguirse los siguientes pasos:

1. Obtener el documento público donde corresponda (por ejemplo: certificados del Registro Nacional de las Personas (RENAP), antecedentes penales, antecedentes policiales, documentos emitidos por notario, etc.).

2. Solicitar la auténtica de la firma del funcionario público ante la autoridad superior de la entidad que lo emite o la que sea competente.

3. Solicitar la apostilla en el Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores.

Se debe tener en cuenta que, de conformidad con el artículo 5 de la Ley del Impuesto de Timbres Fiscales y de Papel Sellado Especial para Protocolos, la tarifa específica del impuesto por auténticas de firmas, efectuadas por dependencias del Estado de Guatemala, tiene un valor de diez quetzales (Q.10.00) cada una.

Dicho impuesto normalmente se paga presentando el correspondiente timbre fiscal de diez quetzales (Q.10.00) en la dependencia que realiza la auténtica, salvo para el caso de la apostilla y de las legalizaciones de los certificados de RENAP, cuyo impuesto debe pagarse mediante un formulario de Declaraguate y posterior pago a través de la banca en línea del banco de tu preferencia que tenga vigente un contrato de adhesión del sistema de presentación electrónica «BANCASAT», de lo contrario puedes pagar presencialmente en un banco.

El pago de la emisión de la apostilla se puede realizar en el Banco de los Trabajadores (BANTRAB) ya sea a través de la banca en línea o en cualquiera de sus agencias.

An apostille is a document issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which proves that a document issued by the Republic of Guatemala is authentic and, therefore, it is valid to be used abroad. 

How much does it cost? 

As of April 9th, 2024, the issuance fee for the apostille will be Q 75.00 each.

How Can You Get It in Guatemala?

An apostille is a document issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which proves that a document issued by the Republic of Guatemala is authentic and, therefore, it is valid to be used abroad.  

To obtain it, you must follow the steps below: 

1. Go to the corresponding entity and ask for a public document (such as: certificates issued by the National Registry of Persons (RENAP for its acronym in Spanish),  criminal records, polices records, documents drafted by notaries, etc.).

2. Request the public officer’s signature authentication before either the highest authority of the issuing entity or the competent authority.

3. Request the apostille in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Bear in mind that, in accordance with article 5 of the Law of Tax Stamps and of Special Stamped Notarial Paper, the specific tax fee for signature authentications, made by government agencies of the Republic of Guatemala, is ten Guatemalan quetzales (Q 10.00) each.

Usually, you can pay said tax by taking the corresponding ten-quetzales (Q.10.00) tax stamp to the agency that carries out the authentication. Although, there is an exception to pay the tax for an apostille and for the legalizations of the certificates issued by RENAP; in such cases, you have to pay for it by filling out a form of Declaraguate, and then pay for it on the online banking system of the bank of your preference. However, the chosen bank must have an existing standard-form agreement of the electronic system “BANCASAT” (Banking for the Superintendency of Tax Administration of Guatemala [SAT by its acronym in Spanish]). Otherwise, you can make the payment in person at bank.

Payment for the issuance of the apostille can be made at the bank Banco de los Trabajadores (BANTRAB) either through online banking or at any of its agencies.
